SAFEGUARDING THE SANCTUARY:
Guarding Against Cultural Trojan Horses in Christian Worship
When Jude wrote about "our common salvation," he also felt compelled to appeal that we
"contend earnestly for the faith which was once and for all handed down to the saints." Jude was
troubled by individuals who had "crept in unnoticed" - a reference to false teachers and false
teachings.
Our current church generation is probably the most scripturally unaware since the Reformation.
People not having a solid understanding of God's Word fall easy prey to articulate, personable
individuals who nonetheless offer false theological doctrine and ideas. The post-modern
questioning and even denial of absolute Truth often slips into the hallowed halls of churches by
way of "positive upbeat music" that promotes and fulfills a felt-needs, entertainment paradigm
often clothed in para-Christian lyrics. Such music is both lyrically and musically devoid of the
qualities that reinforce the purpose of worship, and can easily allow secular, worldly viewpoints
into sanctuaries. Here, Donn provides solid scriptural support for safeguarding the sanctuary
against such benign-appearing offerings.
