DISPUTABLE MATTERS: Balancing Creative Expression and Artistic Restraint

From the time of the early Christian church through the Reformation and up to the present day
the church has been concerned with the appropriate use of artistic expression in the sanctified
halls; in particular, music, but as of late dance and drama. The church has debated —often with
significant tension—the many manners by which God reveals himself to us: through verbal,
intellectual rationalization of Scripture, transcendent knowledge, and by way of non-verbal, even
spontaneous avenues such as some forms of artistic expression.
Some of these artistic expressions have no Scriptural prescription for their inclusion in worship,
so they are relegated to being "disputable matters" as the apostle Paul called many practices not
critical to salvation. But even Paul wrote that some practices are not beneficial and others are not
constructive. In Disputable Matters, Donn LeVie Jr. explores these concerns through the filter of
Scripture, and raises questions about the force pushing the boundary of disputable matters: the
feminization of the Christian church propelled by a new egalitarianism.
